Recent research has found that many more people are keeping their own teeth for longer. Although this is a good thing it also means that when people begin to suffer with decay, the treatments required are more complex and expensive and may be very costly. There is a need to help people keep their own teeth free from decay as long as possible.
Since the 1970’s fluoride toothpaste has been widely used to prevent tooth decay. Standard fluoride toothpaste, available to buy on the high street, contains around 1400 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride. High dose fluoride toothpaste, containing 5000ppm fluoride, is available by prescription from your dentist and is increasingly provided to patients judged to be at risk of decay.
In 2016 prescriptions of high dose fluoride toothpaste cost the NHS over £20 million and these costs are increasing rapidly. However, there is a lack of evidence to demonstrate that this toothpaste benefits patients and is cost-effective for the NHS.
Recruitment of participants to the REFLECT study finished in March 2020 and the study is now in follow-up. There are 60 dental practices across Scotland, Northern Ireland and England taking part in REFLECT and 1161 participants recruited to the study. Thank you to all who took part.
People who took part in REFLECT were randomised to receive either a prescription for 5000ppm fluoride toothpaste or to receive the usual care and advice on buying and using standard fluoride toothpaste.
People who took part were followed up in the study for 3 years and completed questionnaires and their dentist collected data about routine follow-up appointments.
Now that the study has finished, those people who took part in the study should continue to attend their dental practice for regular check-ups.
All information collected during the course of the REFLECT study will be kept confidential. The results will be used to make recommendations about treatments for patients with a risk of tooth decay and published in scientific journals.
We welcome any feedback or questions about the REFLECT study by emailing the coordinating team at REFLECT@dundee.ac.uk.
The Reflect study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme (project: 16/23/01) . For more information please visit www.nets.nihr.ac.uk.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is the sponsor for this study based in the United Kingdom. We will be using information from you and your dental records in order to undertake this study and will act as the data controller for this study. This means that we are responsible for looking after your information and using it properly.
This information will include your name, contact details, date of birth, NHS number and CHI number (Scottish participants only). People will use this information to do the research or to check your records to make sure that the research is being done properly.
We will collect relevant data (e.g fluoride toothpaste prescription information) via NHS central registers. The reason for this is to make sure that we have the correct information about all the participants taking part in this study and ensure that the results are as accurate as possible. In order to do this, we will securely send the NHS central registers some information about you (e.g. date of birth, hospital number, name, address, CHI number (Scottish participants only). They will then match this information to their records and use your study number to securely send any relevant data back to the REFLECT Study Office.
