The participant recruitment phase of the SCRiPT Study is now complete and the study continues in the participant Follow-up phase. SCRiPT’s new end date is 28 February 2026. The results of the study will be published after that date. The SCRiPT study question compares two treatments for deep tooth decay in the teeth towards the back of the mouth (molars and pre molars). The results of the study will help shape the future of dental care and hopefully ensure that our teeth last longer.
For further information or if you have any questions about SCRiPT please contact us via the study email address: script@dundee.ac.uk.
We are inviting members of the public who have had treatment for severe toothache or recently had dental decay treatment to join a Patient and Public Involvement Group to share their experience and give their opinion on how we give information to other dental patients. Please scroll down for further details or contact us at script@dundee.ac.uk.
The SCRiPT study is testing two treatments for deep tooth decay. We know both treatments work. However, we don't know which treatment is best overall for patients and for the NHS. The NHS has funded this research project so we can collect information on a large group of people having both types of treatment. At the end of the study we will report which treatment is best.
Who gets tooth decay? Tooth decay is very common. Most teenagers and adults will have some decay in their back teeth. Treating tooth decay (dental caries) costs the NHS over £3.4 billion each year.
How is deep tooth decay usually treated? There are different ways of treating teeth with decay where the decay has spread deep into the tooth close to the nerve.
Recruitment to the script study is now complete. This means that you can’t join the study now. If you are interested to know what other research studies are taking place in your area you can find out here: https://bepartofresearch.nihr.ac.uk.

The University of Dundee is the sponsor for this study based in the United Kingdom. We will be using information from you and your dental records in order to undertake this study and, will act as the data controller for this study. This means that we are responsible for looking after your information and using it properly. We will keep identifiable information about you for at least 5 years after the study has finished.
This information will include your name, contact details, date of birth, NHS number and CHI number (Scottish participants only). People will use this information to do the research or to check your records to make sure that the research is being done properly.
We will collect relevant data (e.g about visits to the dentist and treatment to teeth) via NHS central registers. The reason for this is to make sure that we have the correct information about all the participants taking part in this study and ensure that the results are as accurate as possible. In order to do this, we will securely send the NHS central registers some information about you (e.g. date of birth, hospital number, name, address, CHI number (Scottish participants only). They will then match this information to their records and use your study number to securely send any relevant data back to the SCRiPT Study Office.
People who do not need to know who you are will not be able to see your name or contact details. Your data will have a code number instead. We will follow ethical and legal practice and all information which is collected about you for the purpose of this research study will be handled in strict confidence and securely stored by the University of Aberdeen.
Your rights to access, change or move your information are limited, as we need to manage your information in specific ways in order for the research to be reliable and accurate.
